Tourniquet Saves Life After Mother’s Day Shooting In Newark: PD

A shooting wounded four people on Mother's Day in Newark. But quick action from police helped to save a woman's life, authorities said.

NEWARK, NJ — A shooting wounded four people on Mother’s Day in Newark, including a woman who was left “bleeding profusely,” authorities said.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, the shooting took place around 4:15 p.m. on the 300-block of Chancellor Avenue.

Police officers responded to the scene after getting multiple calls about a shooting. They found two male victims and two female victims injured by gunfire, authorities said.

Officers Troy Frye and Oscar Acevedo quickly rendered aid to a female victim bleeding profusely from gunshot wounds to her legs, applying a tourniquet to stop the bleeding, authorities said.

“Although one of the victims was initially in critical condition, all four are now in stable condition,” police said after the shooting.

The incident remains an active criminal investigation. No additional information was immediately available.

Newark Public Safety Director Brian O’Hara commended the involved officers.

“Their quick life-saving actions are a testament to the culture change our Police Division has experienced, and to the utmost priority our police officers place on saving lives,” O’Hara said.
