Veteran Newark Police Officer Dies Of Coronavirus
Tolbert Furr served the City of Newark for 25 years. He passed away from COVID-19 complications at Clara Maass hospital, his family said.

NEWARK, NJ — A Newark police officer is among the latest coronavirus casualties in the city, which has seen 35 deaths from COVID-19 as of Saturday, authorities said.
Special Police Officer Tolbert A. Furr, of Newark, died Friday at Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville due to coronavirus complications, according to his family. He was 59.
“The City of Newark grieves collectively with the family of Special Police Officer Furr,” Mayor Ras Baraka said. “This is a loss that touches us all.”

The Newark Department of Public Safety announced Furr’s passing on Friday, expressing condolences for the late officer.
“Special Police Officer Furr served the people of our city for 25 years,” Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said.

“On behalf of the entire Department of Public Safety, Chief of Police Darnell Henry and I extend our deepest condolences to Officer Furr’s family,” Ambrose said. “He will be remembered with distinction for his longstanding commitment and service to our residents.”
According to Essex County officials, Newark has seen 35 deaths and 1,117 cases of COVID-19 as of Saturday morning.
