Video Captures Dye Pack Exploding On Newark Bank Robber: Police

A man robbed a Capital One bank in New Jersey. When he left the bank property, a dye pack exploded, police said.

NEWARK, NJ — A dye pack exploded on a man accused of robbing a bank in Newark on Saturday, police said.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, the suspect was captured on video fleeing the scene (watch footage below).

Police said the robbery took place around 10 a.m., when a man wearing a backpack walked into Capital One bank at 487 Springfield Avenue. The man wrote a note on a withdrawal slip and handed the note to the teller. It read: “I have a gun give me all the money from the register please, and no one will get hurt,” police stated.

The teller gave him money – including a dye pack, authorities said.

The man left the bank, walking east on Springfield Avenue. When he walked beyond the bank property, the dye pack exploded. He then ran north on Blum Street, police said.

The total amount of cash stolen, along with the dye pack, was $2,500. The dye pack contained $200. The final count of the cash stolen was $2,300, police said.

On Monday, Newark police arrested a suspect in the case, Esau Grant, 27, of Newark. Grant was charged with robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, authorities said.
