Worried About Eviction In Newark? This Workshop May Help

NEWARK, NJ —The United Community Corporation will host a free virtual seminar providing information on how New Jersey residents, including those in Newark, can apply and receive housing assistance amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The seminar will be available via Zoom on Saturday, Jan. 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

According to organizers, all participants must register for the event by contacting Housing Coordinator Pam McNeill at pam.mcneill@uccnewark.org or Housing Counselor Damon Redmond at damon@damonhelps.com. The seminar will be recorded and available to those that cannot attend the Zoom broadcast live.

Organizers said:

“The main topics of discussion will be the specifics of United Community Corporation’s Rapid Re-housing and Homeless Prevention programs as well as the various options available to homeowners post-forbearance. McNeill, Redmond and featured panel guests will go over all of the assistance options available for qualified individuals at risk of being homeless due to COIVD-19 or any other hardship, and those that are already homeless. There will also be a Q&A period for those virtually attending to gather more information.”

“This seminar is of the utmost importance for those that are nervous and unsure of what to do when the moratorium is lifted, in reference to either an eviction or a foreclosure,” Redmond said. “Information is key, but knowledge is power. This seminar will give people the knowledge necessary to make educated and informed decisions about what your actual options are.”

According to the United Community Corporation:

“In December, the Federal Housing Administration and HUD announced that the foreclosure and eviction moratorium will be extended through Feb. 28, 2021 for homeowners with FHA-insured single-family mortgages covered under the CARES Act. The moratorium prohibits servicers from initiating or proceeding with foreclosure and foreclosure-related eviction actions. Despite the moratorium’s fourth extension, there is still a looming uneasiness weighing on the many people that are having difficulty paying rent and mortgages during the coronavirus pandemic. According to USA Today, 14-million American households are at risk of eviction and have amassed an estimated $25-billion in rental debt. An estimated 4.9-million are likely to receive eviction notices in January.”

Anyone with concerns about the moratorium or are unsure of what to do once the moratorium is lifted are encouraged to attend UCC’s informational session.

“This seminar will provide some relief to those who are experiencing the possibility of evictions and have no idea what necessary steps to take to avoid becoming homeless,” McNeill said.
