Driver Crashes Into Bergen County Pool: Police

The 32-year-old woman had to be removed from the car by a patrol officer and was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A 32-year-old Emerson woman crashed her car into the pool of a Westwood home Monday morning, according to the Westwood Police Department.

The driver had to be removed from the car by a patrol officer Ryan Sestanovich, who went into the pool and broke a car window to free her, police said.

Sestanovich was issued a department commendation for his actions.

The crash happened at the corner of Lafayette Avenue and Ridgewood Road, police said.

The car was traveling southbound on Lafayette Avenue and as it went around the bend at Ridgewood Road it crossed over the centerline of the roadway, striking the curb, according to police.

The car crashed through a fence, a shed, another fence, down a small retaining wall, onto the pool deck and into the in-ground pool.

The driver suffered minor injuries, lacerations and bumps and bruises, and was taken to the hospital, police said.

The home was not her own and no one else sustained any injuries.

The incident is still under investigation and police has 30 days to issue motor vehicle summonses as appropriate, according to officials.
