Hekemian's Deal with the BOE to Dominate Thursday's Zoning Board Meeting, and More This Week

Does the re-amended application constitute a new application? That's what opposing counsel, SOD and residents want to know.

The Zoning Board of Adjustment is holding a special meeting Thursday at 7 p.m. to continue the hearing of the proposed development of the United Water property by Hekemian. This meeting comes on the heels of the dramatic ending of last week's meeting when counsel for the developer announced that they had entered into a conceptual agreement with the New Milford Board of Education to donate three-acres of property, along with a 'sizable' donation, for a 'field of dreams.'

Opposing counsel plans to petition the Board to consider this a new application, rather than an amendment to the existing application.

Oradell attorney Louis Flora said that because the land will now have a different use, residents who live within 200 feet of the property have to be re-noticed.  Flora's concern was that with only nine days between last week's meeting and Thursday's meeting, there is not enough statutory time to notice all of those owners.

On Monday, there will be a screening of the film Girl Rising at New Milford High School at 7pm in the auditorium. The film is open and free for all students, their parents and faculty. The film is based on the principle that telling stories about individual human beings and their particular circumstances is the most meaningful way and effective way to create understanding. Danielle Shanley, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, says that the importance of the film is that it will raise awareness to the struggles of young women around the world in overcoming barriers to receiving an education.

On Wednesday, the New Milford Girl Scouts will be having their annual Gold Awards ceremony at New Milford High School at 7pm. The Girl Scout Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. Open only to girls in high school, this prestigious award challenges girls to change the world in a positive way. Achieving this award also enables them to be eligible for college scholarships. The idea is for them to develop a project that will solve a community problem—not only in the short term, but for years into the future.

In preparation for Memorial Day, the New Milford Boy Scouts will be laying wreaths at the French Cemetery Thursday at 7pm with the Public Events Committee. First used in 1677, the French Burying Ground is the final resting place to New Milford's pioneering families.
