Faith Lutheran Church Celebrates Shrove Tuesday With Traditional Dinner
The New Providence church observed Shrove Tuesday, also known as Mardi Gras or Pancake Day, with a traditional supper of pancakes and ham.
On the evening before Ash Wednesday, members of Faith Lutheran Church in New Providence shared in a traditional Shrove Tuesday supper of pancakes and ham.
Shrove Tuesday derives its name from the ritual of shriving that Christians undertook many years ago. In shriving, Christians confess their sins and receive absolution for the sins.
As Lent is a time of abstinence, Christians viewed Shrove Tuesday as their last chance for the next 40 days to indulge. Shrove Tuesday is also known as Mardi Gras or Pancake Day.

Historically on Shrove Tuesday, Christians would eat the foods that were not allowed to consume during Lent, particularly the foods that would spoil. Pancakes were often chosen, as they were a dish that could use up all the eggs, fats and milk in the house with just the addition of flour.
New Providence resident, Jessica Short, served as the coordinator of Faith Lutheran’s Shrove Tuesday Supper.
