MLK Birthday Event, Indian Hills High Laptop Distribution This Week

The mayor and council meet this week, as does the Oakland Public Schools District Board of Education.

Here's what you need to know for the week ahead.

  • Borough Hall, Oakland public schools and the Oakland Library will be closed Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Good opportunity to ponder freedom, equality and the dignity of each and every human being we encounter.
  • Indian Hills High School student Nicole DeSantis will be among 19 New Jersey high schoolers being honored for essay writing at a Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration at Community Baptist Church, 224 First St. in Englewood. The Martin Luther King Birthday Committee invites the community to celebrate Dr. King’s 85th birthday with fellowship, song and discussion. The event begins at 6:30 p.m., and will be hosted by Anthony Johnson of Channel 7 Eyewitness News. The keynote speaker for the evening commemoration is Khalil Gibran Muhammad, Director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Admission is free.
  • New Apple laptop computers will be distributed to juniors and seniors at Indian Hills High School this week. Distribution for ninth and tenth graders has been postponed due to shipping delays, but 11th and 12th graders can pick up their machine Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Find the schedule here and school officials ask that you follow it closely.
  • Mayor Linda Schwager and the Oakland Borough Council hold their second regular meeting of the month Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The agenda for the gathering includes the completion of more new year's reorganization tasks and consideration of proposed resolutions including one to authorize a recycling agreement with Green Sky Industries. The meeting, which is open to the public, will be held in Council Chambers in Borough Hall, 1 Municipal Plaza.  
  • The  Oakland Public Schools Board of Education holds its monthly meeting Wednesday night at Valley Middle School. No advance agenda has been released as of press time. The session, which welcomes public attendance and participation, begins at 7:30 p.m. The school is at 71 Oak St.
