Choo, Nunez Swim to New County Records

Undefeated no more, Paramus Catholic hockey falls in County Final

At the Bergen County Meet of Champions, Spartans Harold Choo and Paladins John Nunez swam their way into the record books, setting new times in the 500 freestyle (4:35.57) and 100 breast stroke (58.45).

The Spartans edged the Paladins by one point in the Boys Meet of Champions (91-90) for a fifth place finish as Eric Kim (1st, 200 IM; 2nd, 100 Freestyle), Choo (3rd, 200 IM) and the fifth place 200 Medley Relay (Max Gritz, Choo, Kim, Phil Rim) brought home titles. The Lady Spartans finished 15th overall.

Along with staking his name in the record books in the 500 freestyle, Nunez also led the sixth place overall Paladins in the 200 Freestyle (2nd) and anchored the 200 (5th) and 400 (4th) freestyle relays. Teammate Maciej Paz competed in the 50 Freestyle (5th) and 100 Freestyle (6th). The Lady Paladins finished 9th overall in the Girls Meet of Champions as the 200 (Allyson Archer, Jen Antonietti, Isabella Akhtarshenas, Marie Guerrero) and 400 freestyle relay (Archer, Nicole Jaramillo, Juliana Lally, Guerrero) placed in sixth.

Swimming

In the regular season, Paramus Catholic fell to Bergen Catholic (105-65) and IHA (102-68) this week. Nunez swam the 500 Free in 4:57.25 to first place, approximately 20 seconds slower than his new County record and the 200 Free in 1:54.87. Mike Pacheco picked up the 200 IM in 2:14.59.

The Lady Paladins  were led by Guerrero in the 200 Free (2:06.78) and 100 Free (57.58), Jaramillo in the 50 Free (28.13), the 200 Medley Relay (Lally, Archer, Jaramillo, Guerrero) in 2:10.67 and the 400 Free Relay (Guerrero, Antonietti, Lauren McBrinn, Lally) in 4:10.56.

Ice Hockey

The Paladins fell to the Ironmen 5-1 in the Bergen County tournament finals and suffered their first loss of the season as the Ironmen controlled the pace and puck for three periods. Matt Lepinski was able to scoot in one goal late in the third to avoid the shutout on an unassisted tally.

Matt Cofrancesco had a career high during the Paladins run in the County tournament as he set a new record, five goals in one night, during PC's quarterfinal win over Fair Lawn, 5-0. The Paladins earned a spot in the finals against Don Bosco after their 2-1 victory over Ramsey courtesy of Matt Rainey and Alex Fleischmann. 

Alex Kellenberger stopped 24 shots during Paramus' 5-0 loss to Tenafly.

Bowling

At the Bergen Boys County Championship, Paramus Catholic rolled an overal 5,111 for 11th place while Paramus followed with 4,625 in 19th.

The Spartans fell to Hackensack and Northern Highlands, 7-0 as Takuya Tokinaga rolled a 229 and 243 high games respectively and Anthony Marhsall a 238. The girls defeated both opponents, 7-0 as Haley Hassan stepped up her game rolling high games of 214 and 201. Noel Hodgins bowled a 205 and Brittany Hovan had a 203 game.

Wrestling

Paramus went 2-3 in their five dual meets this week as the Spartans won against Delran (62-6) and Old Tappan (57-9) and lost to St. Joseph Regional (38-33), Northern Highlands (34-22) and Hunterdon Central (41-18). The Spartans recorded 16 pins.

Paramus Catholic had a win and loss during a weekend tri-meet as the Paladins upended Burke Catholic (57-9) but faltered to Pope John (51-21). Zack Cavallaro had pins in one minute and 2:30 while William Duby (1:30), Justin Costello (1:22), Evan Latrella (6:00) and Matt Lee (1:00) also recorded pins.

Basketball

Following the Lady Paladins 61-37 victory over Fair Lawn, Paramus Catholic was granted the #3 seed in the County Tournament. PC drew a first round match-up with St. Mary of Rutherford on Saturday, 2:30pm at IHA.

The Paladins dropped two more games this week as PC fell to DePaul, 58-56, and St. Joseph Regional, 65-62. In both games, the Paladins lead early but were unable to finish in the win column.

Justin Morella (20 points) and Justin Link (16 points) were the lone Spartans to hit double digits during the 75-55 loss to Northern Highlands.

Brittany Stone banked 47 points this week as the Lady Spartans downed Dwight-Morrow (54-38) and lost to Ramapo (59-28) and Northern Highlands (56-34).
