Cookin in Covid

Bergen County Academies' SkillsUSA chapter held a fun Zoom for kids to cook in their kitchens.

The pandemic has been difficult to get through for students of all ages whether it be socially or academically. The students in Bergen County Academies' SkillsUSA chapter realized this and wanted to create an experience for others to connect and take a break from the academic stress. They organized an activity called Cookin in Covid that took place over Zoom on February 28th. It was available for students in elementary, middle, and high school all over the tri-state area. The hosts are currently in the culinary academy of Bergen Academy and decided to teach the students basic kitchen and food safety procedures.
The chapter’s goal was to allow students to get a taste of the atmosphere of a professional kitchen and see if they might want to pursue this career. Along with getting a glimpse of the culinary world, participants were able to have a fun cooking experience. The hosts were able to successfully engage and educate students of all ages. During the Zoom, the students also received an informational presentation on SkillsUSA and its benefits of joining. The presentation also included the accomplishments of the chapter throughout the years and how it can help students have a successful career path. After this Powerpoint came another on kitchen and food safety. The participants were taught about basic safety procedures and how to handle foods and materials in the kitchen.
Next, there were various interactive activities held which the students and hosts participated in. Everyone moved to their kitchens and gathered their supplies to begin the recipes. Snacks such as chocolate bark and charcuterie boards were made. By the end of this experience students gained information on technical workplace skills, culinary safety procedures, and an enjoyable break from stress related work.
