Paramus Names Street in Honor of Longtime Community, Business Man

Stanley Mitchel continues to be remembered as a Paramus citizen, successful business man, friend and family member. 

Monday morning the Paramus community paid tribute to the late Mitchel, a prominent real estate developer and business owner, and longtime community member by naming a street in his name. 

Madison Avenue between Farview Terrace and Route 17 will now forever be known as Stanley Mitchel Way. The street is just a few steps away from 22 Madison Avenue a professional office building just off the highway which was the first piece of property Mitchel developed more than 30 years ago. 

Mitchel died last July at the age of 103. He was one of the oldest living residents in the community. 

His wife, Dr. Selma Mitchel, gave some background into her husband's unique life. She told of his miraculous survival of the Holocaust where he lost everything and everyone in his family. He came to America penniless and could barely speak a word of English. 

She recalled how Stanley drove down the very street they were all standing on 30 years earlier turning left off Farview Terrace onto Madison where he found a piece of land he envisioned as a good place for and office building. That was the birth of what continues to be known as the Mitchel building. 

"Stanley was a very respectful landlord He always responded t the need of his tenants with good will and wisdom," Dr. Mitchel said of her late husband. "He was very tough but also very honest business man with a good and kind heart. He helped many people rebuild their lives from poverty and despair into one of comfort and independence." 

Stuart Liebman, a family friend, said naming a road in Stanley's honor was fitting as it connotes vision and part of the process as he always looked towards the big picture. 

Mayor Richard LaBarbiera echoed the sentiment saying that Mitchel truly led the path to success. 

"If you follow Stanley Mitchell’s Way it will lead you to success, happiness and of course family and fulfillment," said the mayor.
