Paramus Community Celebrates National Night Out

Paramus folks took part in all the fun and then-some of the annual National Night Out event Tuesday presented by the Paramus Police Department. 

There was free food, cotton candy and other treats and many rides for the youngsters and their families to enjoy. The event, which is designed to heighten crime prevention awareness, had many educationally fun activities as well. Kids got to see how fast and far they can throw learning how a radar gun works as Officer Dan Cullen measured their speed as they tossed balls into a net. 

Kids also got try on a pair of fatal vision goggles while trying to hit a golf ball and toss a basketball into a net giving them an idea of what impaired vision by way of being under the influence is like, explained Det. James Teehan. 

Emergency services was on hand showing kids and their parents the inside of the fire trucks.

Tours were given of the mobile EMS communications center - a bus that has been equipped with computers, radio and everything needed to serve as a communication center in the event of an emergency. Dispatcher Ginger Capasso explained it is used in cases where communication for certain events such as a huge accident needs to be isolated so it does not interfere with the townwide communications. 

Many local businesses who sponsored the event were on hand with information as well as many community organizations like the Boy Scouts and the Sunrise Rotary Club. 

The night ended with a concert by Radio Nashvile, the finale installment of the Paramus Cultural Arts Council's Terrific Tuesday summer concert series.
