Paramus Swimming Hits Right Stroke in County Tournament

Hovan continues to roll Lady Spartans along to victory while Vucak bolsters the Lady Paladins

At the Bergen County swim meet, both Paramus schools were well represented in the water as the Paladins placed second (girls) and fourth (boys) while the Spartans claimed third (boys) and fifth (girls).

Diving into a packed Division 3 crowd, the Lady Spartans were led by Christina Boyadjian (200 Free, 100 Breast stroke) and the 200 Free relay squad to swim away with 121 points. The boys team walked out with 184 points courtesy of the 200 medley, 200 Free and 400 Free relays, Ryan Stallone (200 Free, 100 Free), Jeffrey Park (200 IM), Philip Rim (50 Free), Jon Scrivanich (500 Free, 100 Breast stroke) and Max Gritz (100 Back).

The Paladins, who finished with 318 points (girls) and 246 (boys) in Division 1 claimed first place finishes by John Nunez (200 Free, 500 Free) but picked up the most points by multiple swimmers winning several spots in their heats. The Lady Paladins continually swam back-to-back in the 200 IM, 50 Free, 100 Fly, 100 Free, 200 Free Relay, 100 Breast stroke and 400 Free Relay.

Paramus Catholic also earned regular season wins over Passaic Tech (103-67 boys, 99-71 girls) and Ramsey (106-64 boys, 93-77 girls) courtesy of Jacek Deptula, Michael Pacheco, Maciej Paz, Alex Crudello, Marie Guerrero, Nicole Jaramillo, Jen Antonietti, Allyson Archer, and Juliana Lally.

Bowling

Paramus Catholic upset the competition at the Bergen County Girls Bowling Tournament and won their first team title since 2001 after upendeing Westwood in the final. The Paladin boys won over DePaul (7-0) and St. Joseph (5-2) as Brian Rizzi rolled a series 666 and James Kane had a 620. Nikki Vucak (game 206) and Ameera Khan (game 210) led the girls 7-0 over Hackensack.

Brittany Hovan of Paramus placed fourth in the individual section at the Bergen County Girls Bowling Tournament with the Lady Spartans coming in 11th overall. Hovan also led the team in a 7-0 shutout over Indian Hills and Cliffside Park and a 5-2 win over Ramapo. The boys shut out Cliffside Park and Ramapo as Takuya Tokunaga rolled a series 655 but also fell to Indian Hills 7-0.

Wrestling

Paramus Catholic had a rough week in dual meets falling in four meets out of five. The Paladins were able to hang on and outride Ramapo 47-34 as six wrestlers won by pin but fell to West Milford (63-13), Demarest (61-12), Lodi (51-27) and Don Bosco (48-15).

Paramus may have fallen 49-28 to non-league opponent Watchung Hills this week, but the Spartans dominated Pascack Valley (58-9), West Milford (43-21) and Mendham (42-19). Alex Sebahie, Joe Trovato, Justin Cochran, Brandon LoPresti, Nick Bucci, Laith Abwini Brandon Sebahie, Jonah Molina, Matt Tozzi and Brandon Manosalva all earned huge points.

Basketball

While Brittany Stone was making individual history this week during the Lady Spartans 37-35 victory over Indian Hills, the girls basketball team fell to Teaneck 55-28 and Demarest 40-33 as the young team continues to learn how to play with the lead and follow through on winning.

The Lady Paladins fell for the third time this season to IHA, 65-48, as PC struggled to dominate under the boards and allowed the Blue Eagles to run away with the win. PC won over Bergenfield (52-41) and Teaneck (55-49) as well.

The season continues to be a frustrating one for the Paramus Spartans as Stile Kang netted three treys during PHS' 47-43 loss to Indian Hills.

Junior Jalen Henriquez may have netted 49 points in two games this week, but the Paladins are also having a frustrating season as the team fell to Teaneck, 80-76 and Don Bosco, 66-52. 

Ice Hockey

Paramus fell to Tenafly (3-1) and Point Pleasant Boro (10-0) this week as Alex Kellenberger stuffed 53 shots between the posts. Dean Delucia had the lone tally.

Alex Fleischmann has been icing the offense and leading Paramus Catholic to consecutive wins over Clifton (12-3) and Bayonne (11-1) with seven goals. Dan Sowinski and Matt Confrancesco slapped hat tricks into the net as well.

Indoor Track

At the Big North Division Championship, Paramus Catholic placed third (boys/girls) in the United Division with Tatiyanna Sanders (55M, 400M, High Jump, Long Jump), Rosie Menyhart (55M, 400M, High Jump, Triple Jump), Emily Papamarkos (Shot Put), Krystian Bautista (55M, High Jump), Tyronne Washington (High Jump, Triple Jump), boys and girls 4x400 relay and girls 4x800 relay leading the way.

The Spartans struggled in the packed Freedom Big North Division as the boys came in fifth and the girls last as rivals Ramapo, Northern Highlands and Ridgewood claimed many of the top spots. Lindsey Lucas was the lone Spartan to place in the top three as she ran the 3,200 in 12:13.6.
