Spartans Matman Shut Out the Competition

Brittany Hovan will represent Paramus in next week's individual state bowling tournament

The Paramus Spartans completely _dominated the mat_ this week as the team claimed every single weight class in their 77-0 shutout over Indian Hills. Clutch for the Spartans were Nick Ciambrone (5:30 pin), Joe Capone (3:18 pin), Joe Trovato (3:19 pin), Alex Sebahie (7-6 dec.), Brandon Loftiss (11-3 maj. dec.), Brandon Lotrestis (0:19 pin), Matt Tozzi (14-5 maj. dec.) and Brandon Manosalvos (0:53 pin). Nick Pettimel, Laith Abwini, Nick Spinoso, Anthony Agnello, Nick Bucci and Brandon Sebahie all won by forfeit.

Bowling

High rolling Paramus Lady Spartan Brittany Hovan will compete in the state individual tournament next week after finishing eighth overall with a 576. The entire girls bowling team came in third with 2,339 points in Group 2.

The Lady Paladins finished in third place with 2,261 points in Group 3 and then went on to shut out Mahwah 7-0 in the regular season as Anastasia DeLeon rolled a 244 and Nikki Vucak had a 194. The Paladins also defeated the T-Birds 7-0 as Brian Rizzi bowled a 215 game.

Wrestling

The Paladins did not have an easy schedule this past week as Paramus Catholic fell to Cliffside Park (43-24) and Lyndhurst (37-30) but were able to stay ahead of St. Mary's (50-12) and Torah Academy (52-15).

Owen Woods led the Paladins with two pins and two major decisions; Zack Cavallaro had two pins and two technical falls; Michael Scaravilli two pins and one major decision; William Duby two major decisions, one decision and one pin; Evan Latrella two pins; and Marcus Pantoja two pins and one decision.

Swimming

Paramus Catholic Paladins defeated Ramapo (98-71) and River Dell/Westwood (113-57) for the week by claiming the , the 200 Freestyle (John Nunez, Nick Yuan), 200 IM (Mike Pacheco), 50 Free (Jacek Deptula), 100 Fly (Maziek Paz), 100 Free (Alex Crudello), 500 Free (Nunez, Yuan), 100 Back (Paz), 200 Free Relay (Pacheco, Deputla, Crudello/Nunez, Paz) and 400 Free Relay (Paz/Sean Lydon, Pacheco, Crudello/Mike Delgado, Nunez).

The Lady Paladins fell to River Dell/Westwood, 99-71, as Marie Guerrero claimed the 200 Free (2:06.03) and the 100 Free (57.18), Juliana Lally picked up the 100 Back (1:08.85), the 200 Free Relay (Nicole Jaramillo, Lally, Jen Antonietti, Guerrero) finished in1:52.41, and the 400 Free Relay (Lally, Jaramillo, Allyson Archer, Guerrero) swam a 4:06.81.

Paramus boys (103-67) and girls (116-56) both fell to Northern Highlands this past week as the Spartans swept the 200 Medley (Ryan Stallone, Jon Scrivinich, Eric  Kim, Phil  Rim, 1:47.76), 200 IM and 100 Free (Eric Kim), the 100 Breast Stroke (Scrivinich) and the 400 Free Relay (Kim, Scrivinich, Stallone, Park). The girls were led in the: 200 Freestyle by Christina Boyadjian (2:14.97). 

Ice Hockey

The Spartans skated away with a 5-2 loss to Passaic county powerhouse West Milford as Alex Kellenberger finished with 16 saves and goals by Rich LaBarbiera and Tom Palestina. The Spartans were competitive on offense as Highlanders goalie Alexander Crevina finished with 30 saves, but were unable to convert.

Paramus Catholic shut out Clifton, 8-0 as _Dan Sowinski netted a hat trick_, Matt Cofrancesco had a pair, Dom Sellari, Brian Nagy and Derek Sabato had one each to round out the win. Sowinski tallied a second hat trick in the Paladins 4-3 win over St. Joseph Regional with Brian D'Erario adding on a tally.

Basketball

The 3rd seeded Lady Paladins were _stunned out of the County tournament_ by the 19th seeded Tenafly Tigers, 31-30 in overtime as the Tigers slowed the game down to their preferred pace. The Paladins were shut out in the first period and then handed the Tigers 17 turnovers in the game. Paramus Catholic dropped two more games this weeks as the Lady Paladins fell 54-50 to Northern Highlands and then 48-45 to Ridgewood. 

Brittany Stone scored a game high 27 points during the Lady Spartans 50-35 win over Cliffside Park but was limited to 17 points in the 47-35 loss to Tenafly and six in a 46-36 loss to Bergenfield. 

John Morella exploded for 63 points in two games as the Spartans picked up back-to-back wins over Bergen Tech (61-37) and Tenafly (70-61).  Facing the Tigers, Paramus trailed 29-20 at halftime but Morella and Matt Pechman (24 points) blew the competition away in a comeback win. Morella scored 21 points from the free throw line alone. 

Paramus Catholic dug themselves into an early hole against Northern Highlands and even a 33-point fourth quarter spree was not enough to avoid a 67-62 loss. Jalen Henriquez netted 23 points, Michael Menakis has 21 and Rich Holle and Alex Starr had 12 each.
