Spartans, Paladins Fight through County Relays
Paladin hockey earns dual wins while Spartan wrestling fires on all cylinders

Both Paramus schools fought their way through the Bergen County Relays this past week with the Lady Paladins claiming seventh place, the Lady Spartans 15th and the Spartans 12th in the Big-School divisions.
The Lady Paladins saw junior Tatiyanna Sanders shatter records in the high jump with a 5-2 and 36-2.5 triple jump, and run a 25.9 leg in the 4-x-200 second place finish. Teammate Rosie Menyhart hit a 36-1 in the triple jump and 4-10 high jump.
Lady Spartans Jasmine Pineda and Ashe Maghales hit 6-0 each in the pole vault while the 4-x-1,600 relay claimed fifth place with a 23:33.5.

The Spartans had Matt Schneider (17-10.5) and Jade Sobh (17-03.75) just fall out of the top six in the long jump along with David Budnick and Brian Salamanca fly 9-0 in the pole vault. The 4-x-1,600 and 4-x-55HH took third and fourth place respectively with the Distance Medley coming in fifth.
Swimming
Paramus Catholic may have outpaced DePaul 98-71 in the pool this week, but were no match for the Hackensack Comets in their 96-71 loss to split their meets. Facing the Spartans, PC picked up huge points as Jen Antonietti claimed the 100 Fly (1:10.68), Marie Guerrero the 100 Free (57.63), the 200 Free Relay (Nicolle Jaramillo, Antonietti, Juliana Lally, Guerrero) in 1:53.90, and the 400 free relay (Jaramillo, Lally, Allyson Archer, Guerrero) in 4:12.72.

Against the Comets, PC swept the 200 Free (Guerrero, 2:06.32), 100 Free (Guerrero, 57.47), 500 Free (Lauren McBrinn), and the 200 Free Relay in 1:05.09 (Jaramillo,Lally, Elizabella Arle, McBrinn).
Ice Hockey
After falling in the Bergen County tournament to Don Bosco, the Paladins returned to the ice with huge wins over Dumont, 10-0 and Fair Lawn, 5-1, as Matt Confrancesco tallied four goals for the week. Dan Sowinski and Matt Rainey (2 goals each), Brian D’Erario, Keith Henning, Bobby Pietz, Derek Sabato, Alex Fleischmann, Kyle Wolf and Dave Mozeika all had a single tally. Tom Pyrka stopped 30 shots between the pipes.
Paramus got a much needed win, 5-2 over Old Tappan as Harkin Oescner, Dean DeLucia, Richard LaBarbiera, Michael Hopkins, and Christopher Sabo had one tally each. Tom Palestine (hat trick) and LaBarbiera were unable to stave off Pascack Valley in the Spartans 6-4 loss. Goalie Alex Kellenberger had 42 saves for the week.
Bowling
Brian Rizzi rolled a high 607 (215, 214 games) in the Paladins, 7-0 shutout loss to Bergen Catholic while Devin Puccio added in a 205 game. James Kane had a high series 671 (227, 225, 219) and Puccio's 200 game led the Paladins to defeat Don Bosco, 7-0.
Anastasia Deleon rolled a high 613 (233, 211 games) as the Lady Paladins earned a 5-2 win over IHA. Deleon had high games of 220 and 215 during an earlier 7-0 loss to Holy Angels.Â
Wrestling
Paramus has been firing on all cylinders as the Spartans downed Hackensack 40-24 and Ramsey 39-27 as Joe Trovato (2:30 pin), Alex Sebahie (13-2 maj. dec., 2:40 pin), Justin Cochran (3:25 tech. fall), Laith Abwini (20-8 maj. dec., 5:12 tech. fall), Nick Spinoso (7-4 dec.), Brandon Lopresti (8-5 dec., 11-5 dec.), Brandon Sebahie (3-1 dec.), Matt Tozzi (1:40 pin, 0:56 pin), Nick Loftiss (1:06 pin), Nick Pettineo (7-2 dec.), Brandon Loftiss (15-7 maj. dec.), Anthony Agnello (9-2 dec.) and Nick Bucci (6-4 dec.) lead the way.Â
Paramus Catholic on the other hand has been having a rough season, defeating Tenafly, 58-18; but falling to New Milford, 42-35 and Hackensack, 61-6. The Paladins were able to defeat fellow Paramus school, Frisch, 75-6 behind Esteban Mena, Zack Cavallaro, Evan Latrella, Justin Costello, and Matt Lee all recording victory pins. The team later fell to DePaul, 62-15 as Mena pinned Kevin Keaveney in 3:44 and Marcus Pantoja handing William Ryniak a 3-0 decision.
Basketball
While Brittany Stone (34 points) continues to face constant pressure, freshman Nicole DiPasquale has continued to step up for the Lady Paladins, netting 18 points through Paramus' victory over Hackensack (50-36) and defeat to Ridgewood (44-25).
John Morella (36 points) led the Spartans to a 77-70 win over Kearny in double overtime, an 80-67 loss to Hackensack and a 62-43 loss to Ridgewood. Matt Pechman (22 points) and Yusuke Oshimizu (15 points) also worked to chip away the paint for Paramus.
Paramus Catholic gave Rt. 17 rival Bergen Catholic a run for their money during a triple overtime game resulting in a BC 96-90 victory. This closely contested match had both sides passing the lead back and forth as Jalen Henriquez banked 36 points with Kyle Menard chipping in 33.
The Lady Paladins advanced in the County Tournament, 68-38 over St. Mary as Dejah Talor scored 17 points and Tianna Smith added 14. Jasmin Wilson (18 points) shined in PC's 66-44 victory over St. Joseph Hill (NY) as the Lady Paladins shut out the competition 22-0 in the final quarter. Holy Angels may have outshot PC two-to-one in the final period with 24 points but the Lady Paladins were able to escape with a 56-47 victory.
