WATCH: Bergen County Native Stacey Dash's Awkward Oscar Appearance

Paramus High School grad's joke falls flat.

A Bergen County native had perhaps the strangest, and some said cringe-worthy, appearance at the 88th Academy Awards Sunday.

Paramus High School alumnus and Fox News contributor Stacey Dash appeared on stage after a parody skit aired with Whoppi Goldberg, Tracy Morgan, other black actors inserted into some of this year’s nominated films. The skit aired after Chris Rock jokingly responded to this year’s #OscarsSoWhite controversy.

“Let me tell you some good news, the Academy has taken steps to fix this problem,” Rock said. “That’s why it is my honor to introduce the new director of our minority outreach program. Please welcome Miss Stacey Dash.”

“I cannot wait to help my people out,” Dash said, giggling to near silence. “Happy Black History Month! Thank you.”

Dash said the appearance was “a beginning.”

“When they added me to increase the diversity, I’m sure many black people rolled their eyes. I’m not ‘black enough,’ they say. But guess what? I’ve heard that all my life,” Dash said on patheos.com. “I would rather be a free thinking, black than a cookie cutter black who thinks — and votes — just like all my friends.”

People on social media called the appearance “cringe-worthy.” Others called it “bizarre.”
