Man Gets 17 Years For Parsippany Crash That Killed 3

The wrong-way crash killed a father of four, an aspiring hip-hop artist and an advocate for animals.

PARSIPPANY, NJ — A man was sentenced Thursday to 17 years in prison for a wrong-way crash that killed three. Miguel Botero entered guilty pleas Nov. 5 to two counts of vehicular homicide and one count of strict liability vehicular homicide.

The alcohol-induced crash killed a father of four, an aspiring hip-hop artist and an advocate for animals on Oct. 18, 2019 in Parsippany. The Morris County Prosecutor's Office hasn't identified victims, but the crash killed Ronald Francois, Jalen Davis and Julia Wells, respectively.

The families of Davis and Francois are suing three Morristown bars — Iron Bar, Revolution Social Brew House and Horseshoe Tavern — which they claim over-served Botero before the crash. Read more: 3 Morristown Bars Sued In Connection With Triple-Fatal Crash

Botero won't become parole eligible for at least 12 years because of provisions under the No Early Release Act. Specifically, the Dumont man was sentenced to six years for each second-degree vehicular homicide charge and five years for the third-degree strict liability vehicular homicide charge.

The man hit another vehicle while driving on Route 80 eastbound in Parsippany. All three people in another vehicle died.

Francois, 28, of Newark, left behind four children who suffered financially because of their father's death, according to the lawsuit from his family.

Davis, of Stanhope, turned 20 two weeks before the crash. She dreamed of becoming a hip-hop artists and recently returned to New Jersey with hopes a record label would sign her, according to New Jersey Advance Media.

Wells, 20, of Mine Hill, was the daughter of the vice president of St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center, a major North Jersey shelter.
