Man Shoplifted Meat, Stole and Crashed 2 Cars: Parsippany PD

Police say one of the stolen cars belonged to a Good Samaritan who tried to help after the first hit and run.

PARSIPPANY, NJ — A Good Samaritan thought he was doing the right thing when he let someone who had just been in a car crash sit in his pick-up truck. It turned out to be the wrong choice, when that man stole his truck and got into a second hit and run, Parsippany police said.

Alcides Moreira, 50, from Kearny, was arrested on Nov. 12, after he allegedly shoplifted, and got into two hit-and-run crashes with two different stolen cars, police said.

The saga began whe Shoprite employees reported the theft of three beef tenderloins, worth over $160. Management tried to stop Moreira, police said, but he tried to flee in a car officers would later learn was stolen.

He didn't get car: police say Moreira crashed while trying to exit the Shoprite parking lot.

Two good Samaritans stopped to help the crash victims, police said, and one told Moreira he could sit in their truck. As soon as the man started to walk away, Moreira revved the engine and started to drive away, police said.
