Parsippany Elks Honor Old Glory
The group's Flag Day ceremony paid tribute to history and celebrated freedom.
“If you are ashamed to stand by your colors, you had better seek another flag,” says a well-known quote from an unknown author that sums up the sentiment at a June 14 Flag Day ceremony at Parsippany Elks Lodge #2078.
Overcast skies forced a last-minute move inside for the annual event, but otherwise the public tribute went without a hitch.
The observance began in the group's parking lot at 230 Parsippany Road. Cars slowed and heads swiveled in curiosity at the assembly that included tuxedoed Elks officers in tuxedos, Boy Scouts in full gear, onlookers seated in folding chairs and an assortment of Americana, from various stages in our nation’s history, waving proudly on tall flagpoles.

The Elks’ commemoration included recited statements of famous patriots, a historic overview of the flag, and, of course, the traditional salute.
Parsippany Boy Scout Troop 72, led by assistant scoutmasters John Maddox and Keith Hawkins Sr., brought forth and displayed flags from history and from the present day.

“[We are] proud and grateful to be part of the 2011 Flag Day celebration," said Hawkins. "We thank the Elks for inviting us to participate. As Boy Scouts, we have a great respect for our flag, and our country, not just today, but every day.”
One quote that was read (author unknown) declared, which was met with a hearty round of applause from the audience.
Andrea Martone and Paul Cristelli of Re/Max Parsippany provided the Elks with flags that were handed out during the event (the flags had also been passed out at the Parsippany ShopRite and Quick Chek on Monday of this week).
“I donate to the Elks on behalf of my late father, a former Elks officer, who believed strongly in service to the community,” Martone explained, adding that she will distribute flags again for the Fourth of July.
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of America requires all members to pay allegiance to the U.S. Flag. In 1911 the Grand Lodge of Order required that all its lodges observe Flag Day on June 14 each year.
The Parsippany Elks Lodge coordinates a Flag Day event each year and reaches out to other community organizations to participate and join in the recognition of the American flag.
