Warm sunny days seem to beckon our inner gardener, even in early spring. However, if you're looking to ensure your plants stay healthy, it's important to consider the USDA plant hardiness zone map.

Parsippany falls into Zone 6B - the numerical portion of our zone spans parts of Massachusetts down into Delaware, in the northeast. Our last frost for spring is expected to be April 28.

April outdoor plants can include hardy vegetables: broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, lettuce, leeks and swiss chard.

As May approaches, we can start adding in: cucumbers, eggplants, pumpkins, squash, sweet potatoes, tomatoes and watermelon. The rule of thumb for May is to wait for Mother's Day to plant outside.
