Paying for College: All or a Little Something?

Should kids should have some "skin in the game" as a motivator for good performance?

I recently discussed college savings plans with a financial advisor for an article and received some interesting advice. The advisor recommended that kids have some "skin in the game," meaning she felt they should have some financial responsibility for coming up with the money for their education. This, she said, would help young people understand the value of college.

Just imagine your kid's "a-ha" moment: "If I fail, I throw my own money down the toilet".

My parents had a certain amount of money saved and let us know that we could either go to a reasonably priced school that would be 100 percent paid for, or help pay to attend a more expensive school. My brother and I both chose affordable schools.

Aside from the decision of whether to pay for a more expensive school, my skin in the game was feeling that my parents were giving me something of value. My mom insisted that we had to finish college in four years, and we both did. I think my brother and I felt obligated to do reasonably well in school and to finish in four years because we were made keenly aware of the cost and our parents' expectations.

What are your thoughts on paying for your kids' higher education? Will you try to pay for all of it, or do you think kids paying some portion of it keeps them feeling accountable?
