Pup With Newly Amputated Leg Will Need An NJ Home

It's National Dog Month and Patch wants to help 1,000 homeless dogs find loving homes by the end of September, including this 3-legged pup.

BUTLER, NJ — It's National Dog Month, and while many folks have four-legged pals to share their homes, Patch is kicking off an effort we hope you'll join: We want to help 1,000 dogs in New Jersey and Pennsylvania find their forever homes. As part of that effort, we will be highlighting dogs that currently are waiting in shelters for someone to adopt them.

One of those pups looking for a new home is Penelope, who is currently with Tri-Boro Animal Welfare in Butler.

It hasn't been easy for Penelope recently. The Basset mix was given to the Tri-Boro Animal Welfare with a leg break so severe that it required an amputation. Once she is fully healed, she'll need a new home.

Penelope was found as a stray, but because she was wearing an old collar, shelter officials think she used to be someone's pet. The fracture in her right leg might have been caused by someone kicking her, but might also have been the result of an accident, shelter officials said.

"We can’t be sure of what caused her injury, but what we can be sure of is that we want to give little Penelope the best life possible after all she’s endured," shelter officials.

The decision to amputate was made during a surgery earlier this week. Even though she only has three legs, she is still a sweet dog.

She will be kept at the shelter until she is fully healed. You can email triboroanimal@gmail.com for more information. Just want to help out? You can donate to her recovery fund here.
