A thousand years ago a hands-off approach might make sense. But with things like the necessary control of wildfires, and the removal of apex predators such as wolves and mountain lions, the natural landscape here has changed in ways we cannot reverse.

A thousand years ago no need to manage forest; however the natives populations here in America utilized and were part of the organic fiber of the complex ecosystem gifts of the lands resources.
What wildfires have affected the Northern Forest of New Jersey's Highlands? Know of none. The Southern Pine Barrens have fire as part of the co-evolved biome for thousands of years, although fires of late seemed to be caused by human factors illegal fires and tossed cigarette butts.
