Sitting on more than one acre of land, the home once was a 100-acre working farm, one of several carved out of a larger 1,200-acre tract owned by James Van Horne and has been recognized locally and nationally as an American treasure for four centuries.

Most notably, the property hosted Van Horne’s friend George Washington while he stayed at Rockingham, waiting on the news of the Treaty of Paris in 1783. Although Washington never slept in the home as the main house was not yet built, the property lies on the principal route to Nassau Hall where the Continental Congress awaited the signing of the Treaty of Paris.

The Murphy Voorhees House has been extensively renovated over the past eight years by Schulte Restorations of Hopewell. Specifically, the grand rooms with hand-blown glass windows were updated to include air conditioning, and the kitchen was updated to feature professional kitchen appliances and soapstone counters.

The home still features its historic charm and details including a dining room that dates back to 1780 with an original cooking fireplace and hidden stairs leading to a lofted area, and the master bedroom with a separate dressing area and an original fireplace. Additionally, twin parlors were created in the 1840s to provide a generous, warm gathering room in the southwest corner of the home, in addition to the screened porch or sunroom.

Outdoors, the estate features an original stone milk shed, old working well, stately trees and stone walls that stand as reminders of its history.
