PPS said the projects will be cost-effective and done without increasing debt service. The projects will be spread out over five years.

PRINCETON, NJ — Princeton Public Schools (PPS) will discuss urgent and major maintenance projects at the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday. The school district is considering a cost-effective facilities maintenance referendum to replace leaking and aging roofs at all six schools. It also plans to complete other pressing major maintenance projects. This includes repairing facades and replacing "end-of-life" building systems.

PPS said the projects will be cost-effective as they would receive reimbursement from the State “for up to 34 cents on every dollar spent.”

The roof replacement program would also help the district install rooftop solar panels in the future, which could provide further cost savings.

With debt from prior referendums maturing February 1, 2022 and 2023, it is anticipated that all work can be done without increasing debt service from current levels, the district said.

PPS had used funds from a 2018 bond referendum for HVAC units and air conditioning, to convert the old library in the middle school to collaborative classroom space, and to create security vestibules in the middle and elementary schools.
