Princeton University Football Team Opens Season Saturday: What To Know

Princeton hosts San Diego in the season opener Sept. 16.

PRINCETON, NJ — The Princeton University football team is set to open a season in which they have been tabbed as co-favorites in the Ivy League this weekend.

Last month, Princeton and Harvard were named as co-favorites to win the conference championship by the media.

Princeton was 8-2 overall and 6-1 in Ivy League play last season. The Tigers and Penn were conference co-champions, with Princeton winning the head-to-head matchup, 28-0.

The Tigers bring back six starters on offense, but off season surgery for senior quarterback John Lovett means the Bushnell Cup-winner will miss part of the season, according to Princeton Alumni Weekly. Chad Kanoff steps in to deliver passes to returning receivers Stephen Carlson and Jesper Horsted, and tight end Graham Adomitis. All-Ivy senior left tackle Mitchell Sweigart leads an offensive line that returns nine players with starting experience and paves the way for running backs Charlie Volker, a junior, and sophomore Ryan Quigley. All conference lineman senior Kurt Holuba leads the defense.

But before the Tigers begin their quest for a conference title, they open the season at home against San Diego on Saturday, Sept. 16.
