MLK Birthday Event, 2014 Library Storytime Schedule
Municipal meetings galore, school board work session, winter reading opportunities at the Ramsey Library and more this week.

Here's what you need to know for the week ahead.
- It's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day in these United States. Unlike many municipalities, the Borough of Ramsey is open for business, as is the Ramsey Free Public Library, and public schools are in session. Still, please remember that the day was named a federal holiday for an important reason: Take a moment Monday to ponder freedom, equality and the dignity of each and every human being we encounter.
- Don Bosco Preparatory School student Michael Kidd-Phillips will be among 19 New Jersey high schoolers being honored for essay writing at a Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration at Community Baptist Church, 224 First St. in Englewood. The Martin Luther King Birthday Committee invites the community to celebrate Dr. King’s 85th birthday with fellowship, song and discussion. The event begins at 6:30 p.m., and will be hosted by Anthony Johnson of Channel 7 Eyewitness News. The keynote speaker for the evening commemoration is Khalil Gibran Muhammad, Director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Admission is free.
- Monday features a meeting of the Ramsey Recreation Commission at 7:30 p.m. The gathering will take place in the municipal building's first floor conference room. Meanwhile, happening simultaneously upstairs in the second floor council chambers, the Board of Public Works will hold its periodic meeting. Borough Hall is at 33 N. Central Ave.
- On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, the Ramsey Public Library is the place for you and your beginning reader to be. The library features Storytime for different age ranges throughout the week for 2014. On Tuesdays, 2 1/2-3 1/2 year olds are welcome from 10-10:30 a.m. On Wednesdays, Storytime for newborns and kids up to 18 months is offered from 9:30-10 a.m. Children 19 months-2 1/2 are welcome from 10:30-11 a.m. And 4-6 year olds have two Storytimes: Wednesdays from 1-1:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 10-10:30 a.m. The literacy-promoting effort is free and there is no need to register—kids with caregivers can drop in. The Ramsey Public Library is at 30 Wyckoff Lane.
- The Borough of Ramsey has announced changes to the senior activity list for seasoned citizens. Ramsey Senior Center volunteer Doris Stellingwerf said that Tuesday shuffleboard is not meeting; however, there now will be shuffleboard and pool on the schedule for Wednesday at 1 p.m. Activities take place at the Senior Center, 205 Church St. in Finch Park. A list of all borough-sponsored senior events can be found here.
- On Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., the Ramsey Planning Board will meet at the municipal building to consider a site application, according to its agenda. The board gathers in council chambers.
- The Ramsey Board of Education holds a work session Tuesday night at Hubbard School. No agenda has been released; this gathering is to ensure that work is ready to be presented and discussed at its Jan. 28 regular meeting. Tuesday's session begins at 7:30 p.m. The school is at 10 Hubbard Lane.
- Mayor Christopher C. Botta and the Borough Council will hold their second meeting of the month Wednesday night; no agenda had been released at press time. The mayor and council will meet in work session at the municipal building at 7:30 p.m. and the public session follows at 8:30 p.m. The proceedings will take place in council chambers.
- Ramsey's Design Review Board gathers Thursday night at the municipal building at 7:30 p.m. The meeting takes place at Borough Hall.
