Police Chief Bryan Gurney confirmed Stegen’s death to Patch Monday and the department posted about it on its Facebook page.

Gurney also spoke about the personal connection he and Stegan enjoyed.

“He knew I wanted to be a police officer and he helped get me my first job with the department as a dispatcher in 1979 and I haven’t left since,” Gurney said. “If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here. He will be missed. He was a good man.”
