Bridgegate's Bridget Anne Kelly Running For Bergen County Clerk
Kelly served as Gov. Chris Christie's deputy chief of staff during the Bridgegate scandal. She formally announced her candidacy Monday.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Bridget Anne Kelly, a former official in the Gov. Chris Christie administration during the Bridgegate scandal, will run for Bergen County Clerk.
Kelly, who served as Christie's deputy chief of staff, had her 2016 conviction in the scandal unanimously overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court in May.
A candidate website was launched Monday morning which addresses the scandal.

"During her time as Deputy Chief of Staff, she was scapegoated in the scandal known as “Bridgegate” which involved, among other things, a purported traffic study with lane closures that then turned into national news. Unbeknownst to her, there was no such study and those she trusted damaged her reputation and allowed her to be indicted, tried, and convicted – all while they went on to lucrative careers," read the section.
Kelly was found guilty in November 2016 of conspiracy, wire fraud and civil rights violations connected to the scandal, which involved shutting down several local access lanes to the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee as retribution against Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich, a Democrat, for not endorsing Christie for reelection in 2013.

Kelly's conviction was overturned unanimously by the U.S. Supreme Court in May. Justice Elena Kagan said prosecutors wrongfully applied federal statutes to the case in the court's opinion.
"Not every corrupt act by state or local officials is a federal crime. Because the scheme here did not aim to obtain money or property, Baroni and Kelly could not have violated the federal-program fraud or wire fraud laws," she wrote.
Kelly said she's "learning from her experience" and "rededicating her career in government."
"Bridget seeks to rid our system of corruption and hyper-partisanship," campaign officials said, through a statement on the website.
