GRPD Warn of Cell Phone Scam

Message targets users over texts.

There's a new cell phone scam making the rounds and Glen Rock police are asking the public to be on the lookout.

According to the department, a text message scam is being sent to various phones indicating there is a problem with the victim's bank according. The message instructs the victim to call a phone number, another form of phishing, according to the GRPD.

"The GRPD advises residents not to call or email any unsolicited requests and never divulge personal info to anyone that called them or provided the number to call," the department wrote. "Always call the phone number on the back of your cards or from your statements. Never simply follow website links in an unsolicited email, always type the bank's known web address manually or use a bookmark that you made. Be very cautious when providing any personal information and make sure you know who you are talking to."

The department is not actively investigating the scam but rather providing information to educate the residents. Police say there's no need to report additional instances of the scam unless they lost money.
