Heat Advisory, Air Quality Alert In Effect For Bergen County

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory and an air quality alert for Bergen County on Monday.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A heat advisory is in effect for Bergen County until 8 p.m. on Monday.

The National Weather Service issued the advisory for the county as of 3:46 a.m. on Monday, and says the heat index could reach 103-degrees.

Hot temperatures and high humidity could cause heat illnesses to occur, according to the NWS.

In addition to the heat advisory, an air quality alert has been issued for Bergen County, in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

An Ozone Action Day has been declared, meaning the ozone forecast is expected to reach unhealthy status for sensitive groups along the south of the I-95 corridor, according to the NWS.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection said this includes "the very young, the elderly, and persons with respiratory diseases such as asthma," and that those groups should avoid strenuous activity during the afternoon and early evening.

An Ozone Action Day has also been declared for Tuesday, the NJDEP said.

The NWS recommends drinking "plenty of fluids", staying in air-conditioned rooms, staying out of the sun and checking in on relatives and neighbors.

Additionally, extra precautions should be taken if working or spending time outdoors. When possible, the NWS says, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.

A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Mostly sunny, with a high near 97. Heat index values as high as 103. West wind 7 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.

A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 9pm. Mostly clear, with a low around 74. Northwest wind 5 to 9 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Tuesday

Sunny, with a high near 94. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming west in the afternoon.

Tuesday Night

A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 9pm. Partly cloudy, with a low around 74. West wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm in the evening.
