Strong winds are also expected, which the NWS said could down tree limbs or power lines.

"We are about to enter the worst of this storm. It is going to be very bad for the next 12 hours," Gov. Phil Murphy said on Twitter Monday.

Murphy said the early afternoon would bring the "teeth" of the storm, and the state Department of Transportation had 3,900 pieces of equipment deployed to keep up with worsening road conditions.

The NWS said travel could be "difficult to impossible" during the storm, and, if comments from Bergen County officials are any indication, that equipment will be needed.

Ridgewood's Office of Emergency Management reported "slick" road conditions, which were likely to get worse as increased snowfall continued to decrease visibility.

"A car accident is extremely likely," officials said.
