Ridgewood Girl, 5, Calls 911 to Save Choking Mom

Chloe Olson is receiving praise for her quick thinking.

When Chloe Olson's mother began choking on a tortilla chip, the 5-year-old girl knew what to do – call 911.

The incident occurred at about 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday at her Stevens Avenue home in Ridgewood. In a 37-second call to dispatch, Chloe says, "Daddy, mommy is choking."

"She's choking?" the dispatcher replies. "Yes. She can't talk right now."

The dispatcher instructs Chloe to open the front door and to await help. Calmly, she says "OK" before telling the dispatcher, "Love you, bye" and hanging up the phone.

By the time units had arrived, Kerry Olson had already dislodged the food.

According to Ridgewood Police Chief John Ward, Chloe had previously seen videos detailing the steps to call 911 in an event of an emergency. Village public safety officials had shown the video, he said.

"She would watch that all the time," Kerry Olson told The Ridgewood News. "We're wondering if maybe that stuck in her head," she said.

Chloe was effusive in her praise for emergency responders.

"They were very nice, and they came right away," she told the weekly paper.
