Ridgewood Students Excel at 2021 National History Day Contest The 2021 contest theme was Communication in History: The Key to Understanding, and in the midst of a global pandemic when many students across the country used new communication tools to attend school and pursue their studies, this year’s circumstances provided added context for the topics chosen to address the annual theme. Isabella Harelick, Isabel Lee, Paul Nasr, and Alice Zhang joined more than half a million students globally who completed projects in one of five categories: documentary, exhibit, paper, performance, or website. Isabella Harelick, Isabel Lee, Paul Nasr, and Alice Zhang created a documentary titled A Voice for the Oppressed: Sir Harold Evans and the Sunday Times Campaign . After completing a project, students compete in a series of contests beginning at the local level. The top students from all 50 states, D.C., U.S. territories, and international schools are invited to compete in the National Contest. “To make it to the National Contest is always a remarkable achievement,” said NHD Executive Director Dr. Cathy Gorn. “Given the added challenges this year due to the ongoing pandemic, I was heartened to see NHD students prove themselves once more and persevere despite adversity. The critical thinking and research skills these students learned through competing in NHD will serve them and provide a solid foundation for success throughout their academic and professional careers.” More than 400 historians and education professionals served as judges for the students’ work, and as with all other aspects of the contest this year, the judging was conducted remotely online. More than 100 students from across the country were awarded cash prizes between $500 and $2,000, each, for superior work in specific judging categories. The National History Day Contest was established in 1974 and currently engages more than half a million students every year in conducting original research on historical topics of interest. Seven Students Receive Prestigious Art Award

Seven Ridgewood High School students have been named recipients of the Montclair Art Museum 2021 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, a remarkable achievement for any young artist. Fourteen pieces of art were recognized, earning three Gold Key awards, four Silver Key awards, and seven Honorable Mentions.

The award winners who were selected as part of the top 30 percent of the most outstanding work submitted among their peers are as follows: Zach Kim: Balloon Boy, Honorable Mention Self Portrait, Honorable Mention Kate Minn: Performance Activism, Silver Key Hyewon Park: Seventeen, Honorable Mention Seung Hee Rhew: Family, Honorable Mention Variety, Honorable Mention Saori Takahashi: Pride: Iteration on Klimt, Silver Key Koinobori, Silver Key In Twos, Silver Key Emergence, Gold Key Oblivion Island, Honorable Mention Lulu Xu: Glow Up, Gold Key My Catastrophic Teenage Years, Gold Key Vivian Yuan: Pomegranate Still Life, Honorable Mention

National Merit Scholarship Program Announces Semifinalists

Eight Ridgewood High School students have been designated semifinalists in the 66th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. An additional 22 students have been identified as commended students in the 2019 competition.

Le Grand Concours (National French Contest) National Latin Exam

The 43rd annual National Latin Examination was administered to over 127,000 students, and Ridgewood High School Latin students garnered 75 awards across the various levels. Several students were also recognized for noteworthy achievements. Maria Walsh (grade) scored a perfect paper, answering all questions correctly on the Latin II exam. Latin IV students Aum Mundhe and Kateryna Morhun earned the Maureen O'Donnell Award for three years of gold medals, each receiving a gift of the Oxford Classical Dictionary. Latin V students Katherine Bamberg and Ridley Handley earned the Carter Stubbs Drake Goad Memorial Award for four years of gold medals, each receiving a gift of the Oxford Companion to Classical Literature.

Sixty-five students were recognized for their performance on the 2020 National Spanish Examinations, earning 4 gold, 9 silver and 11 bronze medals, along with 41 honorable mentions. Students from Ridgewood High School have a long history of high achievement on these exams and were taught by Spanish teachers, Angelica Cuellar, Tara Cuneo, Damary Purrinos and Megan Rotella.
