Ridgewood's Hache Sworn In As Bergen Commissioner, Not Freeholder

With the name change official, the Bergen County Commissioners swore in former Ridgewood Mayor Ramon Hache and incumbent Joan Voss.

HACKENSACK, NJ — Wednesday marked a new chapter for the Bergen County board known formerly as Freeholders, and not just for the two members sworn in.

During the board's annual reorganization ceremony, former Ridgewood Mayor Ramon Hache and incumbent Joan Voss, Fort Lee, were sworn in as Bergen County Commissioners, not Freeholders.

The distinction is important, as Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation in August officially eliminating the title of "Freeholder" from public office, stating that the term was "rooted in structural racism" and an "outgrowth of a time when people of color and women were excluded from public office."

Murphy was present during the Wednesday ceremony, when he swore in Hache.

"Truly honored to have been sworn in tonight as Bergen County Commissioner by Governor Phil Murphy. I am very excited to join a great team and to continue and build upon the tremendous work they have done for the residents of Bergen County," said Hache.

The Board also chose their 2021 leadership as Steven Tanelli, D-North Arlington, Tracy Silna Zur, D-Franklin Lakes, and Voss were selected to serve as Chairman, Vice-Chairwoman, and Chair Pro Tempore, respectively.

"I am honored to be chosen by my colleagues to be the first chairman of the Bergen County Board of County Commissioners," said Tanelli. "I look forward to working together with the County Executive, department heads, county employees, and community leaders to ensure Bergen County continues to be the best county in New Jersey."
