Sexting in Middle School: Is 13 Too Young For Cell Phone?

Wyckoff student's nude photos go viral. How should parents respond?

Dozens of Wyckoff middle school students may have received a nude photo of a classmate on their cell phones this week. The sexting scandal, , has everyone talking.

Earlier this week, parents received notice from the school that "some students at Eisenhower have recently sent or received inappropriate images of a sexual nature via cell phone." According to additional reports, a 13-year-old student to two teen boys, who forwarded the photo to their friends. As of Thursday morning, anyone in possession of the photos would face dire consequences.

The incident brings many questions to mind. In the electronic age, how do we shield our children's eyes from things they are too young to see? At what age should children be warned against sexting? And at what age are children mature enough to handle the responsibility that comes along with having a cell phone?
