Mrs. Murrin - Beloved Kindergarten Teacher for 30 Years

Marian Murrin, 100, passed away peacefully on January 14th at her home in River Edge, where she had resided for the past 62 years. 

Born in River Edge on August 31, 1912 she was the daughter of the late Augustus and Maud Hasbrouck, and beloved wife of the late William R. Murrin. Marian was a graduate of Hackensack High School and Mills College, NYC. 

Marian married the then Lt. William Robert Murrin on April 10, 1937 in the chapel of the West Point Military Academy. The Murrins were stationed in Hawaii for two years, where she began her teaching career prior to World War II. When the U.S. entered the war, Lt. Murrin was deployed to the European Theater of Operations, and Marian returned to New Jersey, where she resided in Ridgewood with her parents and taught kindergarten in Allendale.

After the war, the Murrins built a house in River Edge, and at that time Mrs. Murrin began her illustrious tenure teaching kindergarten at Cherry Hill Elementary School. There she remained for 30 years, where she was beloved by a multitude of students. 

Mrs. Murrin is survived by her niece Judy Bernhart Barbour and her husband G. Michael Barbour of Duxbury, MA; great-nieces and their husbands, Laurie Breyer of Fitchburg, MA, and Amy Mahoney of Reading, MA, as well as numerous cousins, godchildren and friends.

Graveside services were held on January 17, 2013 at Hackensack Cemetery, Hackensack, NJ. 

Donations in her memory may be made to the Salvation Army, local animal shelter or charity of choosing.
