Bergen Catholic is sending members of its football team down to Duncan, South Carolina to compete against some of the best football teams in the South in the Palmetto State 7on7 Showdown June 14 and 15. This event is part of the National Select 7on7 Championship Series.

“We bring our team to this tournament because we believe the competition is unmatched,” said Nunzio Campanile, BC’s head coach.

The tournament features South Carolina's perennial powerhouse, Byrnes High School, whose team defeated the Crusaders in the 2012 championship game.

Last summer the Crusaders finished undefeated in pool play, and finished (13-1) overall after falling short in the championship game to Byrnes (25-21). Jon Germano was named the co-MVP of the tournament, while Kyle Queiro was named Defensive MVP.

“It’s a great challenge to our players and an excellent way to kick off our summer," Campanile said. "It is a first class event with incredible organization and true hospitality. We hope to come back every year.”

This year’s field includes 17 different schools hailing from four different states: South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and New Jersey. For the 2013 tournament, BC will field two different squads and will once again look to advance to the tournament championship game.

In 7on7 football, there is no tackling allowed, but touch rules apply for defenders. The field is 40-yards long and an offense has only three downs to move the ball 15-yards at a time before either scoring a touchdown or turning it over on downs.
