Cherry Hill School Crossing Guard Honored by Students with Crosswalk
The dedication of a crosswalk to Cherry Hill Crossing Guard, Joe Maugeri, was the brainchild of three fourth-graders who wanted to do something nice for the man who keeps them safe everyday.
Julie Panchi wanted to do something nice for the man who safely sees children across Bogert Road every day -- 90-year old crossing guard and World War II Veteran, Joe Maugeri. Â
With the help of her two classmates, Andreia Lisboano and ToniAnne Gagliostro, and her teacher Robert Hall, Panchi wrote a letter to Mayor Sandy Moscaritolo asking if they could do something to honor Maugeri's service. Moscaritolo brought the letter to the Council and together they agreed to come up with something and support the girls in honoring Maugeri's 15 years of service and dedication to the children of Cherry Hill.Â
After tossing around a number of ideas, it was decided that they would dedicate a crosswalk to Maugeri at his post. The dedication took place Wednesday morning with the school children holding up their hand-made signs in honor of Maugeri.Â

"He's a fixture," Moscaritolo told the assembled audience of students, teachers, residents and officials. "And what better tribute than to give him his own fixture?"
Also present at the dedication ceremony were Councilwoman Kathleen Murphy, Councilmen Alphonse Bartelloni, Anthony Cappola and Edward Mignone, Superintendent Tovah Ben Dov and Principal of Cherry Hill Elementary School Denise Heitman.
