Crusaders Set New Records in Track, Golf
Baseball teams are on a run for both schools this week while River Dell lacrosse both dropped tight losses

Both the Bergen Catholic golf team and track javelin squad set new records this past week.
Crusaders golf set a new course record when they defeated Don Bosco 150-164 at Upper Montclair with three golfers shooting under par – Ryan Rose stroked a 28, eight points under par (36), while teammates Zach Egermayer and Steven Weingroff carded a 34 and 37 respectively. The Crusaders golf team also picked up wins over Passaic Tech (148-181) and Northern Highlands (149-165) while claiming their fourth straight team title in the Garden State Cup over The Peddie School.
At the same time, the Bergen Catholic javelin relay team of Nick Regan (172'10"), DeShaun Morris (160' 3"), and Garrett Hessman (140' 11") smashed the previous school record set in 1975 with a total of 473' 11" during the River Dell Season Opener Invitiational. At the tournamet, the Crusaders finished in second with the help of the javelin trio (first place), the 4-x-800 relay (first place), the 4-x-200 relay (sixth place), 4-x-400 relay (second place), shot put (third place), and pole vault (third place).Â

The 4-x-800 relay team of Tom Selvaggi, Joe Ludwig, Matt Morano, and Dan Lynch traveled to Holmdel High School in an effort to qualify for the prestigious Penn Relays. In needing to run under a time of 8:08, the four Crusader underclassmen ran 8:05.9, finishing in 3rd place in the qualifying meet, and improved their chances to be invited to the 118th Penn Relays in Philadelphia.
River Dell
Scott Kim and Jack Schaefer led the Golden Hawks golfers in their 176-203 victory over Westwood and again 161-238 over Clifton. Kim has been shooting between a 38-41 per game with Schaefer averaging in the 40's.

The Lady Hawks softball defeated Westwood, 9-0, to start off the week but were shut out by Northern Highlands, 1-0, and Pascack Hills, 3-0.
River Dell’s Alex D’Espisito earned his first win on the mound, an 11-5 victory over Westwood as Brandon Martinez blasted in a double, triple and homerun with five RBI’s overall. The Hawks baseball team also defeated Bergenfield, 7-1, and Pascack Hills, 6-4, before falling to Fort Lee, 3-2.Â
During their Season Opener Invitational, boys track placed fifth overall with the girls following in third. Both teams defeated Dwight-Morrow this week, 88-43. In their Invitiational, the Hawks claimed first in the shot put and discuss and fifth in the pole vault while the Lady Hawks claimed fourth in the shot put, second in the discuss, triple jump and pole vault and sixth in the high jump.
Tennis is 3-2 for the season after shutting out Westwood, 5-0, and Fort Lee, 3-2. Singles Zach Wynne (first), Ilya Leifer and Ilya Masayoshi (second) and Patrick Thane (third) all recorded wins for the week.
Boys lacrosse squandered an early lead to Pascack Valley for an 8-7 loss after leading 6-3 at halftime. Steve luca, Michael DeBenedetto (3), Grant Kuchar (2), and Bobby Wapelhorst scored for the hawks. Ben Sagerman had 13 saves.
Girls lacrosse fell to Wayne Valley, 11-7, as the Lady Hawks fell into an early 5-2 halftime deficit. Emily Wong had a hat trick in the loss. Noel Lawler (two goals), Gabby Davidson and Amy Manzelli also scored. Kayla Rowley stopped 10 shots.
Bergen Catholic
After falling 1-0 to St. Joseph Regional, the Crusaders rebounded on the diamond over Palisades Park (13-3), Paramus Catholic (5-2), Don Bosco Prep (3-1) as senior Zach Cerbo recorded a pair of home runs. The Arizona-bound cathcer has now raised his batting average for the season to .810 (16-for-21, with nine extra-base hits).
Volleyball defeated Passaic Valley (25-19; 25-23) on Monday afternoon in Oradell, giving the Crusaders their fourth consecutive victory in this early stretch of the season. However, that streak came to an end when arch rival Don Bosco Prep defeated Bergen Catholic (25-20, 25-10).
Lacrosse beat St. Joseph Regional (15-3) and St. Joseph's of Metuchen (13-3) to remain undefeated. Mike Reilly and Tucker James have each scored five goals this week and recorded four and five assists respectivelly.
Tennis began their 2013 season with a divisional road win against St. Joseph Regional (4-1) as Sean Fernandez, Brian Balico, and Matt Liguori each won their singles matches, while Will Felix and Keith Spaar claimed a victory in a doubles match. The Crusaders then defeated their second straight divisional opponent by a (4-1) margin, this time on the road against Paramus Catholic, as the Crusaders were led by Fernandez (7-5; 6-0), Balico (6-0, 6-0), Billy Carney and Liguori (7-5, 6-1) and Felix and Spaar (6-4, 6-3). Bergen was then shut out, 5-0, by arch rival Don Bosco Prep.
