Now Entering "Joe Maugeri Crossing" as Council Set to Honor Borough Resident
Two honorary street signs should be installed near Cherry Hill by the end of the school year honoring longtime crossing guard Joe Maugeri

After celebrating his 90th birthday and being honored by the River Edge Board of Education for his years of service to the district, Joe Maugeri will soon be honored once again. This time with permament street signs parking his crosswalk post at Cherry Hill School as "Joe Maugeri Crossing"
The borough Mayor and Council approved the plan at a previous meeting and will look to have it completed prior to the end of the school year.
The initial suggestion to honor Maugeri with the signs came from Cherry Hill student Julia Panchi, her classmates Andrea Lisboano, Toni Ann Galgiostro and their teacher Robert Hall.Â

The three students wrote a letter to the governing body pitching the idea and later spoke with Mayor Sandy Moscaritolo and Councilwoman Kathleen Murphy during a class visit.
"My idea was to have to match the streetscape," Mayor Sandy Moscaritolo said. "The streetscape has decorative lamps with a smaller pole next to it. I thnk we could use the smaller decorative poles with a decorative sign at the crosswalk."

According to Moscaritolo, the signs most likely be installed by the Department of Public Works.
Maugeri began volunteering as a crossing guard in the fall of 1996 outside of River Dell but later transferred to Cherry Hill where he has remained since then. And while most of his time is spent getting to know the students at Cherry Hill, he is known just as well by the Roosevelt School students that attend the annual Veteran's Day ceremony.
The Cherry Hill PTO and students' families will also honor Maugeri with a one-of-a-kind tile designed by artist Marion Grebow depicting  Cherry Hill, an American Flag and Maugeri as a crossing guard. The tile once completed will be displayed at the River Edge Library as part of its art mural.
