Tentative Autumn Date Set for River Edge Library Roof Replacement
The roof, which has been extended four times already, will need to be completely replaced

Considered in "dire need" of replacement due to the current EPDM (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer) single-ply rubber membrane failing, the  River Edge Library roof replacement project will now have a tentative autumn start date.
The estimated $250,000 project had to be pushed back to September as the actual funding would not be available to the borough until mid-June. Construction plans are expected to be completed this spring and bid out over the late spring/early summer months.
"I am prepared to start construction drawings at any time," architect Peter Pulice said. "There is zero life to that roof with excessive ponding, the membranes are in bad shape, joint failures and the mechanical equipment is not elevated high enough. The metal roof in the front is in a state of failure and the only thing in good condition is the cupola."

Additionally, roof cores that were previousl taken revealed that at least 50% or more of the roof has insufficient insulation and during the roof replacement that item would need to be addressed as well.
He also noted that the barrel vault roofing's internal drains around the entrance are not pitched properly and over the years the additional tar and membranes that were added have created a heavier look.

"When I do my inspection we'll be able to ascertain just how much of the roof has to be repaired," Pulice said. The roof is constructed on a wood frame and due to water infiltration, Pulice stated that during construction there is a possiblity for discovering mold and water damage. "I expect that five to seven percent of the roof area will be in need of sheathing replacement."
Pulice had previously estimated that the roof replacement project could cost between $245,000 to $265,000 and take eight to 12 weeks to complete. A new roof would have a lifespan of 25 to 30 years.
