Longtime Residents Become Fanwood's First Same-Sex Marriage

David Rivera and Sandy Herrera, Fanwood residents for 22 years, were also the first in the borough to enter into a civil union in 2007.

Mayor Colleen Mahr officiated Friday at the first marriage of a Fanwood same-sex couple.

David Rivera, who works in IT sales, and Sandy Herrera, a program manager, both Fanwood residents for the past 22 years, were married Friday morning in Fanwood Borough Hall by the Mayor.

The couple was also the first in Fanwood to enter into a civil union in 2007, a ceremony which Mayor Mahr also performed.

The marriage was witnessed by the couple's niece, Jasmine Colon, and her fiancé, Michael Donofrio, both of Piscataway.

Early on the morning of Oct. 21, Mayor Mahr married two other same-sex couples in Red Bank at the request of Red Bank councilman Ed Zipprich, who married his partner.
