FSPY gymnasts compete in first meet of the season

The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA (FSPY) C Division gymnastics team has started its competitive season with a home meet on January 26.

The C Division team competes USAG XCEL Gold rules and was represented by 13 gymnasts, many of whom were competing for the first time. They competed in four different age groups.

The 9 and under age group was represented by Aiden Steinwald, who placed 1st in the All-Around, Bars and Floor and 2nd on Balance Beam. Evan Doran received 2nd place ribbons on Vault, Bars and Floor, while Alana Lamberti and Sophia Monteith also made a showing in 3rd and 4th place, respectively, on Balance Beam. Monteith also place 3rd on Floor.

Diane Morrow was awarded 1st place on Bars in the 10-year-old age group. Morrow also placed 2nd in the All-Around and 3rd on Vault, Balance Beam and Floor. Second place on Bars went to Emma Johnston, while Alyssa Larmore took home the 4th place ribbon. Julia Squashic, Jenna Glander and Kiera Brennan also represented the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA team in the 10-year-old age group.

First place All-Around in the 11-year-old age group was earned by Xing Liao, who also took 1st on Vault and Beam and 2nd on Bars.

The 12 and over age group saw Carol Oakes-Garcia win 1st place on Floor and tied with fellow teammate Heather Sherman with 3rd place on Beam. Sherman also took home 3rd place on Floor and 5th place on Vault.

Gymnastics classes offered at the YMCA include parent-toddler, preschool and school-age classes. They are offered Monday through Saturday. This is a great time to begin taking gymnastics at the YMCA! Registration also is open for summer school-aged gymnastics camps. In addition, the Y offers dance and sports classes and camps. Birthday parties also are available.
