Fundraiser Set Up To Help Scotch Plains Local Struggling With ALS

The community is rallying behind Carol Rachko, who has Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, and needs help to cover expenses for her care.

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — The Scotch Plains community knows Carol Rachko as a beloved mother, wife, friend, co-worker, or volunteer. Now Rachko needs the community's help after she was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig's Disease — a fatal disease affecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord and their ability to control muscles.

Rachko was diagnosed with ALS on April 22, 2019. Since then she has lost the use of both arms and hands requiring assistance with activities of daily living such as eating, dressing, toileting and bathing.

Rachko's family has already used their savings to pay medical bills and facilitate care. However, more funds are needed for additional care such as creating a handicapped bathroom and finding care for her.

"Those who know the Rachkos are aware they champion an 'open door' policy for friends, family, even strangers- always making their home welcome and accessible to all. Let’s return this sentiment and unite to make the Rachko home physically accessible to Carol as she fights to live her best possible life with ALS," according to the fundraiser.
