Highlights from Week 5 of FSPY Men’s Basketball

The league remains at three-way tie for first place

The predictions for a major winter storm never materialized, so the ballers of the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Men’s 30+ Basketball League rejoiced, during Week 5 play on Jan. 20.

Game #1

Winning team: Lightning With A Splash Of Thunder (58)
Losing team: Under The Radar (48)

The Radar jumped out to an early 9-4 advantage, but then Lightning struck with a 20-0 run to forge a lead they would never relinquish. Super soph Orlando Jean-Charles led the charge with 15 pts, Warren Lowe had 14, Capt. Troy Sims tossed in 9, rookies Rick Harris and Drew Stahley contributed 6 each for the Thunder, winners of four straight. Eljay Aguillo netted a game-high 21 pts as Radar cut the deficit to one in stanza two. Backcourt mate Greg Shea was butter with 14 tallies.

Winning team: Draymond (55)
Losing team: The Goonies (40)

Draymond held a 31-26 margin at halftime, but pulled away after the intermission on the shoulders of Capt. Jamal Berry’s 27 pts. Vets Dave Berger (8) and Keith Karyczak (6) aided the victors, who notched their 3rd consecutive win. Gregg Carder (12) and Kevin Adams (10) reached double-digits, and Joe DeGennaro finished with 9 for the Goons, who have dropped three in a row.

Game #3

Winning team: SuperSonics (48)
Losing team: RunAsOne (44)

Fab frosh Joe Ruocco poured in 18, as the Sonics used a late surge to outlast the Runners. Brendan Ryan threw in 9, and the frontcourt tandem of Capt. Stephen Murray and James Patrick 7 apiece, as the super-hot Sonics have fashioned a three-game streak. Capt. Jason Shann stroked in 16 markers, center Bryan Stitt powered in 11, and Doug Barker put home 7 for RunAs, currently mired in a four-game skid.

Game #4

Winning team: Team 8 (77)
Losing team: Ocho Macho (42)

This one was never in doubt, as five players registered 10 or better for the high-flying Team 8, who remain in a three-way tie for first place – Capt. Blake Sonnek-Schmelz (19), Mike Pollack (17), Gavin Ford (14), Rich Cobbinah (11) and Rory Schulman (10). Ocho fought hard in the second half thanks to Tim Gray’s 15, Geoff Gonzales’ 11, and 6 from both Craig Cichocki and Capt. Joe Encarnacion.
