Scotch Plains-Fanwood Vote Tallies To Be Updated Saturday

The Union County Board of Elections posted its unofficial results on Tuesday night but will not post an update on vote totals until Saturday

SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ — The polls may have closed but votes are still being counted in Union County and across the country. And voters should not expect an update on vote tallies in Union County until Saturday, according to the Union County Board of Elections.

As of Wednesday morning, Union County Clerk Joanne Rajoppi said 177,684 ballots were received out of the 372,854 registered voters in Union County.

The board posted its unofficial results on Tuesday at 11:17 p.m. but will not post an update on vote totals until Saturday, the Union County Board of Elections posted on its election results website.

Taking a look at the local races, as of Tuesday night, Democrats appear to be leading in the race for mayor and council in Scotch Plains, according to unofficial results.

Rajoppi said 19,607 ballots were sent to registered voters in Scotch Plains and 6,266 in Fanwood. It is unclear how many ballots from Scotch Plains and Fanwood were already received.

In Scotch Plains, there is a contested Mayoral race with Republican incumbent Alexander M. Smith running against Democrat Joshua G. Losardo.

Here are the unofficial results as of 11:17 p.m. on Tuesday:

  • Joshua G. Losardo: 4,856
  • Alexander M. Smith: 3,582

"We are optimistic but want all votes counted before we declare victory," Losardo said of his and Zimmerman's lead.

Although Smith is behind Losardo in the mayoral race he "believes that every vote must count and there are still thousands of ballots yet to be tallied," Smith's campaign manager Harrison Neely said.

    There is also a contested race for the 1st Ward Council Member seat with Democrat Ellen Zimmerman running against Republican incumbent Theodore J. Spera.

    Here are the unofficial results as of 11:17 p.m. on Tuesday:

    • Theodore J. Spera: 3,254
    • Ellen Zimmerman: 5,125

    In Fanwood, there is an uncontested race on the municipal level with two Democrats running unopposed for three, four-year councilman-at-large seats.

    • Jeffrey Banks: 2,042
    • Anthony Carter: 2,038

    Scotch Plains-Fanwood Regional School Board has five candidates vying for three seats in the upcoming election.

    Amy Boroff and Margaret Maggie Savoca are running for the one, three-year seat to represent Fanwood on the board.

    Here are the unofficial results as of 11:17 p.m. on Tuesday:

    • Amy Boroff: 1,501
    • Margaret Maggie Savoca: 784

    Dr. David Levine, Evan Murray, and Karen Mitchell are running for the two, three-year seats to represent Scotch Plains on the board.

    • Dr. David Levine: 3,745
    • Karen Mitchell: 4,736
    • Evan Murray: 4,328
