Scotch Plains Resident Scammed Out Of $30K

Two men were also arrested after police say they found them driving in a stolen car in the township.

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — A Scotch Plains resident was reportedly scammed out of $30,000 recently, according to the police blotter.

On April 27, a resident on Grand Street reported a fraud. The resident said they gave money to an online acquaintance who said he had been beaten up in Egypt and needed money for medical bills, according to police.

The resident had sent more than $30,000 before realizing that they were being scammed, said police.

On April 26: Kashawn Smith, 18, of Jersey City and Elijah Davis, 22, of Jersey City were both arrested and charged with receiving stolen property. Patrolman Joe Mirabile saw a 2010 black Honda Accord driving in the area of E. Second Street at a high rate of speed. The car was reported stolen out of Jersey City. He stopped the vehicle without incident. Both parties were taken to headquarters for processing and the vehicle owner was contacted.

On April 27: A resident in the 300 block of Victor Street reported the theft of a 2013 Ford Econoline van. The vehicle was entered stolen and recovered on April 30 by the Jersey City Police Department. Another vehicle belonging to the victim was also burglarized.

On April 27: A resident on Richmond Street reported damage done to their vehicle.

On April 29: A resident on Country Club Lane reported a motor vehicle burglary.

On April 29: A resident in the 2500 block of Mountain Avenue reported fraudulent activity on several bank and credit accounts.

On April 29: A stolen 2006 Ford E250 van was recovered in the 200 block of Victor St. The vehicle was reported stolen out of Bloomfield on April 25.

On April 29: A business owner on E. Second Street reported an illegal dumping.
