Shackamaxon Country Club Voted a Top Private Club Bargain

For the third consecutive year, New Jersey golfers have honored Shackamaxon in the Golfstyles Readers Choice Poll.

For the third consecutive year, Garden State golfers have voted Shackamaxon Country Club—a century old gem in the Scotch Plains/Westfield area of Union County—among the Top 10 “Best Private Club Bargains” in GolfStyles New Jersey 2015 Readers Choice “Best of the Best” online survey. Shackamaxon was also ranked among the top private clubs in the “Favorite Private Course” and “Favorite Teaching Professional” (Joe Bush) categories.

More than 60,000 votes were cast by golfers in the annual survey that garners readers’ opinions on both private and public golf in New Jersey.

Opened in 1916, Shackamaxon features a classic A.W. Tillinghast-designed course that boasts the architect’s famous island green, an expansive clubhouse with numerous venues for special events or meetings, casual and gourmet dining, and a pro shop filled with the latest fashions and equipment.

In the summer of 2015, Shackamaxon unveiled to its members and guests a high-end, resort-style pool complex. A 25-meter main pool surrounds a sprawling deck with chaise lounges, chairs and private cabanas. Other highlights include an in-water lounge, swim-up/walk-up tikki bar with flat screen TV’s, separate adult pool area and spa, and a children’s pool with water features.

The pool complex is the latest enhancement for Shackamaxon since being purchased in December of 2011, by an affiliate of RDC Golf Group, a New Jersey-based golf course ownership and management company. Other improvement projects have included a full golf course bunker renovation and construction of a new cart barn along with the refurbishment of the main ballroom and upgrade of the men’s locker room.

With these enhancements, a dedicated staff, and a myriad of events and activities, Shackamaxon is experiencing an exciting renaissance. Social Memberships have nearly tripled in three years and Golf Memberships are near capacity. Golfstyles award-winner Joe Bush, Shackamaxon’s director of instruction, is a member favorite who has created one of the strongest junior programs in the area. Sports Memberships (includes pool) offer area residents a great recreational option in an unobtrusive country club atmosphere.

“In less than five years, Shackamaxon has established itself as the golf and social center of the Scotch Plains-Westfield area” says Christopher Schiavone, co-owner of Shackamaxon Country Club and chief executive officer of RDC. “Our investment in the preservation of the club’s A.W. Tillinghast masterpiece as well as the introduction of top-notch amenities and services is resonating with our members through unprecedented growth. The acknowledgement from Golfstyles readers further validates that ‘Shack’ is a great private club value.”
