Hasbrouck Heights Doc Loses License, Admits To Molesting Patients

A doctor who for years had his practice in Hasbrouck Heights admitted to inappropriately touching six female patients during exams.

HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ — A doctor who for years had his practice in Hasbrouck Heights was permanently barred from practicing medicine in New Jersey after he admitted to inappropriately touching six female patients during exams, said New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal.

The physician is Dr. Carl J. Renner, 66, who had his medical license permanently revoked Wednesday by the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners.

As part of his plea to criminal sexual contact, Dr. Renner admitted that he intentionally touched six female patients inappropriately and without legitimate medical purpose or their consent, during exams at his Hasbrouck Heights practice, according to the Attorney General.

Renner was first arrested on June 6, 2019 on charges that he sexually assaulted one single female patient. His license was then temporarily suspended. He was also prohibited from entering his former medical practice during business hours when patients may be present.

Police investigated and found more victims, they said.

Later in 2019, he was indicted on charges of sexually molesting up to seven female patients, all between the time period of May 2009 and June 4, 2019.

On Aug. 24, 2020, Renner pleaded guilty to six counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact, "admitting that he intentionally touched the breasts or vagina of six female patients without legitimate medical purpose and without the patients' consent, for the purpose of humiliating or denigrating those individuals during medical procedures and on examinations on various dates between at his Hasbrouck Heights practice," read this consent order from the state board.

Under the Final Consent Order, Dr. Renner is precluded from reapplying for his New Jersey license to practice medicine and surgery at any future time, and managing, overseeing, supervising, or influencing the practice of medicine or provision of healthcare activities in the state.

The Board also assessed a civil penalty in the amount of $30,000, of which $10,000 is to be paid within 18 months. The remaining $20,000 will be suspended as long as Dr. Renner agrees to never practice medicine again in New Jersey.
